Countdown to Olympic Day – 19 days to go!

4 | 6 | 2014

On 23 June, the world will celebrate the 2014 edition of Olympic Day as hundreds of thousands of people of all ages participate in sporting, cultural and educational activities organised by National Olympic Committees and International Federations across the globe.

An interactive map of the hundreds of Olympic Day activities that are already planned across all five continents can be seen here, and National Olympian Associations are encouraged get in touch with NOCs to explore how they can involve their members in Olympic Day activities in their country.

Olympians are also being activated across the globe with various Olympic champions featuring in a fun video trying new things and taking part in sports different from their own.

The IOC video, which can be accessed here, shows 18-time Gold Medallist Michael Phelps swimming backwards; Olympic champion Usain Bolt playing cricket; Sochi 2014 half-pipe champion Iouri Podlatchikov skateboarding and Gold Medallist hammer thrower Koji Murofushi playing golf.

In line with the three pillars of Olympic Day – movelearn and discover, this is the perfect opportunity to mirror these activities and encourage young and old from communities across the globe, regardless of their abilities and background, to get moving, learn the benefits of physical activity, discover new sports and most importantly, embrace the Olympic values of excellencefriendship and respect.

Olympic Day participants are also encouraged to ‘capture the moment’ by sharing photos on social media and using the hashtag #olympicday to show what you’re doing to be part of the movement.
