Countdown to Olympic Day – 2 days to go!

21 | 6 | 2014

Olympians will be out in force across Australia to help mark international Olympic Day on 23 June.

As part of its Olympic Education Programme the Australian Olympic Committee is teaming up with dedicated Olympians who will visit schools around the country to promote the Olympic values and share their experiences of how sport has changed their lives. The activities aim to encourage young people to participate in sport and lead active and healthy lives under the Olympic Day themes of move, learn, discover.

Just some of the Olympians involved in school visits include middle distance runner Andrew McManus who competed at Athens 2004, as well as skeleton racer Lucy Chaffer, free-style ski-cross racer Katya Crema and slopestyle skier Anna Segal all fresh from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Schools all over the sport-loving nation will be getting into the spirit of the day. St Andrew's Grammar School in Perth, Western Australia will be marking the occasion by marching in the Olympic colours to form the Olympic Rings before lighting a torch and reading the Athletes’ Oath in a special ceremony ahead of their school cross country.

Members of the public can also meet an Olympian at the National Sports Museum in Melbourne. Four-time Olympian Steve Moneghetti (marathon), double gold medallist from Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 Gill Rolton (equestrian), Sydney 2000 gold medallist Claire Mitchell-Tavener (field hockey), Atlanta 1996 bronze medallist Jenny Holliday (softball) and Stephanie Moorhouse, who represented Australia in artistic gymnastics at Athens 2004, will be on hand to share their experiences over the next four days.

Don’t forget to share your own Olympic Day experiences with us and tag any photos you take with #olympicday on social media.
