27 | 4 | 2016

The WOA has welcomed the response from NOAs following the launch of its 2016 NOA Development Grant programme last month with a number of early submissions already funded for the year ahead.

Now in its third year the programme allows NOAs to apply for funding to cover administration costs, support initiatives and communicate with members.

Among the NOAs who have so far applied for 2016 grants are Korea, Great Britain, Moldova, Zimbabwe and India.

The Korea Olympians Association will use the funding to support a number of initiatives including their Olympians Exchange Program, the KOC Youth Sport Club and their Olympians Academic Sport programme. The grant will also help cover the costs of hosting a continental NOA workshop later this year.

Great Britain’s Olympians Association will spread their funding across a range of community based projects such as support of the upcoming World Fit pilot scheme, Olympian participation in charity event the Westminster Mile and strengthening their relationship with the World Academy of Sport (WAoS), along with a social event in London for British Olympians to mark start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in August.

Moldova Olympians Association plan to use the grant to support vulnerable Olympians who need health or financial assistance, to host an annual meeting for their members as well as to stage Olympic Day activities on 23 June.

Zimbabwe Olympians Association will help fund the involvement of Olympians across a number of national sporting, cultural and Olympic Day events, the voluntary training of children in Olympic sports as well as an education and awareness campaign on anti-doping and the dangers of match fixing.

While India will use the grant to coordinate and connect Olympians with corporate and government employment, education, mentoring and financial programmes to ensure they are receiving the best possible advice and support post retirement.

WOA PresidentJoël Bouzou, said:

“We are delighted that NOAs are taking the opportunity to apply for our Development Grant funding. We have had a good response so far and it has been wonderful to hear about all the exciting ways our members intend use the money to grow their organisations, improve the lives of their Olympians and spread the Olympic values within their communities.

“We continue to encourage NOAs that haven’t yet applied to make the most of this funding programme. Together we can help serve the needs of Olympians at all stages of their careers and show our commitment to engaging with our wider community.”
