WOA President Joël Bouzou OLY has sent a note of congratulations to the newly elected IOC President Kirsty Coventry. Kirsty Coventry has become the first female President in the history of the IOC and follows in the footsteps of the previous two Presidents in being an Olympian.
Joël Bouzou OLY said: "We are very proud and happy that an Olympian will be at the helm of the IOC for at least another eight years. A first-round landslide victory was certainly unexpected but shows the unity of thought of the IOC Members. By electing the first female President the IOC Members demonstrated that the years of the IOC, WOA and others working for gender equality have paid off.
“We worked very well with Kirsty when she was Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission and are looking forward to working closely with her again to promote the interests of Olympians, the IOC, the Olympic Movement and society in general through the power of Olympism and the role model influence of Olympians.
“We are hoping to meet with Coventry and her team very soon to discuss how we can deepen our relationship and help her achieve her five key priorities as spelled out in her election manifesto, which were to: ‘harness the power of sport, maximize collaboration & engagement, strengthen partnerships for mutual growth, champion sustainable development and advance credibility and trust.’”
