World Olympians Association (WOA) has released the following statement following the announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that WOA Executive Committee member Tatyana LEBEDEVA (Russia) has been sanctioned for historic doping offences during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
“World Olympians Association takes the protection of clean athletes and the fight against doping extremely seriously. We believe in zero tolerance for convicted drug cheats. WOA has been actively campaigning for the adoption of our three point anti-doping plan within the Olympic Movement. Therefore, we were extremely saddened and disappointed to learn of the sanctioning of WOA Executive Committee member Tatyana LEBEDEVA.
“The WOA Constitution requires all members of its Executive Committee to sign the WOA Code of Conduct which includes the IOC Code of Ethics and which is very clear on the question of doping violations and the WOA sanctions which follow.
"WOA this afternoon received the resignation of Tatyana LEBEDEVA from the WOA Executive Committee. WOA is calling an urgent meeting of its Executive Committee to discuss this matter, including possible WOA sanctions, in accordance with its constitution and its zero tolerance stance on drug cheats.”
