WOA Mourns the Passing of Three-Time Olympian, King Harald V of Norway

The World Olympians Association is saddened to learn of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, a three-time Olympian and lifelong member of the Olympic and sporting community, who died on 28 August 2026 at the age of 89.

Long before ascending to the Norwegian throne in 1991, King Harald represented his country as an athlete on the Olympic stage. A passionate and accomplished sailor, he competed at three consecutive Olympic Games; Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972.

At his first Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, the then Crown Prince Harald was given the honour of carrying the Norwegian flag at the Opening Ceremony. Competing in the three-person keelboat event, he and his crew finished eighth. He returned to compete at Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972, completing an Olympic career spanning three editions of the Games.

His passion for sailing continued throughout his life. In 1987, King Harald and his crew became world champions in offshore sailing aboard Fram X, and he later added a European title in 2005. Remarkably, he continued competing in national and international regattas well into his eighties, bringing his competitive sailing career to a close only in 2022.

King Harald also maintained a close connection with the wider Olympic Movement throughout his life. He officially opened the Lillehammer 1994 Olympic Winter Games and was awarded the Olympic Order in Gold that same year in recognition of his contribution to the Olympic Movement.

His lifelong commitment to sport extended far beyond his own achievements as an athlete. He remained a passionate supporter of Norwegian athletes and was a familiar presence at Olympic Games and sporting events around the world, most recently supporting Norway's athletes at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

King Harald's life represented an extraordinary connection between Olympism, public service and a genuine lifelong love of sport. From carrying his country's flag into the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo as a young Olympian to supporting new generations of athletes more than six decades later, sport remained a constant throughout his life.
