Olympian community called on to support Nepal following devastating floods

The World Olympians Association is joining WOA Executive Committee member Deepak Bista OLY in calling on the global Olympian community to support the people of Nepal following the devastating floods that have struck the country.

On 26 August, a catastrophic flood swept through areas of northern Nepal, causing widespread loss of life and extensive damage to homes, roads and critical infrastructure. Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha are among the districts severely affected, with search, rescue and relief operations continuing across the region.

Deepak Bista OLY, who represented Nepal in taekwondo at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and carried his country's flag at the Opening Ceremony, has appealed to his fellow Olympians to stand with those affected.

“Nepal is facing a devastating flood and landslide crisis,” said Bista. “I humbly appeal to WOA and our entire Olympic family for any support possible for the affected people. Every help matters. Together, we can make a difference.”

Bista and his family are safe, but communities across the affected regions have suffered devastating losses.

The Government of Nepal has launched an official appeal for financial assistance to support ongoing search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts. Donations can be made directly to the Government of Nepal's Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, including by international credit or debit card.

WOA President Pernilla Wiberg OLY said: “Our thoughts are with Deepak, Nepal's Olympians and everyone affected by this terrible disaster. The strength of our Olympian community lies in standing together, particularly at times of great need. We encourage Olympians around the world who are able to help to support the official relief efforts.”

WOA extends its deepest sympathies to everyone who has lost family members, friends and loved ones, and stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
