Olympic Day celebrations in Poland started early this year with the 21st Olympic Day Picnic taking place on 25 May in Kepa Potocka Park in Warsaw, marking the 100th anniversary of the Polish Olympic movement.

Around 30,000 people took part in the traditional celebration, which has been held every year since 1998. Organised in collaboration between the Polish Olympic Committee and Polish Olympians Association, the picnic is the largest sport and recreation event in Poland.

150 Olympic medalists joined special guests including IOC Member Mr Chinh-Kuo Wu from Chinese Taipei, Chairman of the IOC Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission, Polish government and NOC officials and a delegation from the Japanese city of Takasaki, who were there as part of Poland’s partnership agreement with Japan aimed at deepening relationships between the two countries ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Olympic medalists delighted fans by taking the time to chat, pose for photos and sign autographs. Forty stands were also in place at the picnic to promote different sports, Fair Play Council of NOC  and clubs, putting on competitions, games and demonstrations for attendees.

Andrzej Krasnicki, President of the Polish Olympic Committee, said:

“It was a fantastic occasion to see so many people join us for our Olympic Day celebrations and a fitting tribute to mark the 100th anniversary of the Olympic movement in Poland in this year.

“Every year the Olympic Day Picnic brings people together around the Olympic values, which hold a special place in Polish society. We are grateful to the Polish Olympians Association for their ongoing partnership and their passion and their involvement from many years in promoting Olympic Day in Warsaw and around the country.”

Olympic Day is celebrated globally on 23 June each year to mark the anniversary of the modern Olympic Games. Olympians everywhere are encouraged to get active and help promote the Olympic values and the Olympic Day pillars of move, learn, discover.
