Following the spectacular PyeongChang 2018 Opening Ceremony, World Olympians Association has extended a warm welcome to all first time and returning Olympians competing at the XXIII Olympic Winter Games.

Earlier today athletes from all over the world came together to celebrate the start of the Games at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, marking the beginning of an exhilarating fortnight of sport.

A special moment in the sporting careers of any athlete competing for their country under the Olympic Rings, but particularly special for those representing their nation on the Olympic stage for the first time.

WOA President Joël Bouzou OLY said:

“I would like to congratulate all Olympians for the determination and dedication it took to realise their dream of competing on sport’s greatest stage. You are part of a unique community of Olympian role models. You represent the Olympic values, the Olympic spirit and the hopes and aspirations of millions of people in your own country and around the world.”

Following the Games, Olympians who have competed at PyeongChang 2018 will be eligible to apply for the post-nominal designation OLY. Like PhD or MD, OLY is used after your name so that the world knows what you have achieved whenever they see your name.

OLY recognises the years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance it takes to become an Olympian and is a constant and visible reminder of what you have achieved by competing at the Games.
