28 Olympians were the star attraction at the launch of the Star Sailors League (SSL) Gold Cup at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. Olympic sailors from 21 countries received their OLY certificates and pins from WOA President, Joël Bouzou OLY, and WOA Executive Committee member, Malav Shroff OLY, in an OLY Ceremony hosted by SSL on 13 June.
The ceremony was part of a wider gathering of the global sailing community to mark the first edition of the SSL Gold Cup, an international sailing competition endorsed by World Sailing.
Olympic champion Mateusz Kuznierierewics OLY spoke about his Olympic journey representing Poland in multiple Games. The event was also attended by renowned sailors including 7-time Olympian and multiple Olympic medalist Robert Scheidt OLY, 3-time Swiss Olympian Nathalie Brugger OLY, 5-time Olympian and SSL President Xavier Rohart OLY, as well as America’s Cup winner John Bertrand OLY.
Twin brothers, Tonu and Toomas Toniste OLY from Estonia who competed together in four consecutive Olympic Games shared a special OLY moment on stage. World Champion Jean-Baptiste Bernaz OLY recounted that it was a proud moment for him to be able to represent France in the Olympics and to use OLY in his name.
WOA President, Joël Bouzou OLY said, “It was fantastic to celebrate the achievements of sailing Olympians at the SSL OLY ceremony. It was heart-warming to see so many of the Olympians proudly donning their OLY pins and I would like to thank SSL for creating this opportunity to recognise the Olympians in this special moment at the Olympic Museum.”
