Masanga Hospital Thanks WOA for #TargetEbola Support

The Masanga Hospital in Sierra Leone has expressed gratitude to the World Olympians Association for providing support via the #TargetEbola campaign during the recent Ebola epidemic. 

In a letter of appreciation, Dr. Jurge van Kesteren, Medical Officer in Charge of the hospital, said that the WOA’s support helped secure funds for the regeneration of infrastructure and supplies that were depleted during the height of the crisis.

In the letter, Dr Kesteren, said:

“With the donation of the World Olympians Association we have made another step in the right direction to provide safe health care in a catchment area with over 440,000 inhabitants.

“I am pleased to announce that, though faced with extreme difficulties, the Masanga Hospital successfully found donor funds to enable the upgrading of needed infrastructures, the disposal of contaminated wastes, supply of running water, sanitation, solar power and fencing for physical separation and control of the movement of people throughout the hospital grounds.

Since 2006 Masanga Hospital has supported the Ministry of Health and Sanitation’s efforts to serve the people of Sierra Leone. The hospital is a fully functioning 100-bed health facility with maternity, pediatric, surgical and general wards. 

#TargetEbola was launched in October 2014 following a plea to the WOA from two-time Sierra Leone Olympian Francis Dove Edwin who is also a member of Presidential task force to fight the spread of the virus in his home country. Since then the WOA has teamed up with international aid organisation Oxfam and US humanitarian NGO Medisend International to deliver much needed supplies to West Africa.
