8 days to go to Olympic Day: Czech Olympians Aim for Record-Breaking Olympic Day Run

Czech Olympians will lead their country in a running event on a grand scale for Olympic Day 2015. The T-Mobile Olympic Run will unite runners across the country in an attempt to break the record for one of the biggest ever cross-country running event in the Czech Republic.

An expected 20,000 runners of all ages and abilities from around the Czech Republic will take part in a series of simultaneous races on 24 June as part of the official Olympic Day celebrations being organised by the NOC. Participants can choose between a gold, silver or bronze category race depending on their ability and a percentage of the voluntary entry fee from each runner will be used to support the charitable activities of the Olympic Foundation, which gives disadvantaged children and young athletes access to play sport.

The Olympic Run is being supported by a number of high profile Czech sporting and Olympic legends including six-time Olympian and gold medal winning skier Katerina Neumannová, who will lead proceedings in the city of Ceské Budejovice, and former world champion and London 2012 Olympic rowing gold medallist Miroslava Knapková, who will direct the race in the capital Prague. Also taking part in the event will be double Olympic sprint canoe champion Martin Doktor and triple jump bronze medallist from Atlanta 1996, Šárka Kašpárková.

Imrich Bugár, Director of the Olympic Run and Olympic silver medallist in discus at Moscow 1980, said:

“Since the event began in 1987 we have seen it go from strength to strength and this year we are expecting it to be the biggest ever. It is a true celebration of sport in the Czech Republic and recognises the importance of the values of Olympism by encouraging people of all ages to get involved.

“My fellow Olympians and I are very much looking forward to taking part in the event and promoting the Olympic Day ideals of Move, Learn and Discover. We hope on the 24^th of June the whole Czech Republic will run!”

Olympic Day marks the date in 1894 when the modern Olympic Games were born and commemorates the formation of the International Olympic Committee by encouraging everyone, everywhere to get involved and get active.
