7 days to go to Olympic Day: Technology Aids USA Olympic Day Awareness

16 | 6 | 2015

The United States is using technology to drive its Olympic Day awareness and participation with record numbers of Olympic Day activities planned across the country.

Olympic Day is celebrated annually around the world on 23 June and inspires communities to Move, Learn and Discover while embracing the Olympic ideals. This year the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the National Olympians Association are harnessing the power of technology to encourage sporting bodies, clubs and associations everywhere to get involved and register events.

Through a successful campaign using social media, biweekly e-newsletters and a dedicated online registration platform to promote and encourage Olympic Day activities, the USOC has ensured it has events planned in all 50 U.S. states and hundreds of Team USA athletes are set to attend these celebrations.

As of May this year the U.S. had also broken the record for most Olympic Day events ever hosted by a nation with 1,056 and that number was expected to grow as awareness increased throughout June.

Angela Ruggiero, Olympian, IOC Member and WOA Executive Board Member, said:

“What we’re seeing is a huge response to collaborative efforts by the USOC and the US Olympians Association to connect with Olympians and sporting organisations around the country. Throughout the month of June we’re hoping to engage with communities across America and inspire them to become part of the Olympic and Paralympic movements and really instil in those communities a sense of what Olympism means.

“What’s really exciting is that through this campaign, not only have we broken the record for the most Olympic Day events ever hosted by one nation but we can also confirm we have an athlete from every Games dating back to the Oslo and Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games registered to participate in Olympic Day 2015, which is a great achievement.”
