Olympians deliver sports kits to change lives in Mali

16 | 1 | 2019

Olympians in the West African nation of Mali are driving participation in sport and inspiring the next generation of children by creating much-needed sports equipment kits for schools in the city of Bamako, thanks to a WOA Development Grant

The project is led by Los Angeles 1984 sprinter Abdoulaye Traore OLY, Kassim Traore OLY [Boxing, Seoul 1988], Yaye Seyba OLY [400m, Seoul 1988], Cheick Oumar Bathily OLY [Football, Athens 2004] and Abdou Traore [Football, Athens 2004]. The kits, which include a set of ten hurdles, ten cones, and ten throwing vortex, are delivered to the schools by the Olympians, who then conduct bi-weekly demonstrations, practice sessions and competitions.

The aim of the project is to introduce the children to track and field events which they have previously not had access to, to inspire the next generation of Malian athletes and to spread the values of Olympism.

Discussing the initiative, Abdoulaye Traore OLY said:

“This is the true spirit of Olympism. We are using the WOA’s Grant to create a better future for children within our capital city. Sport is about empowering people to achieve more in their lives. This is an exciting time for these children, and I cannot wait to watch them learn and grow.”

WOA President, Joël Bouzou OLY, added:

“It is incredible to see the inspiring programmes that are being delivered around the world. The Malian Olympians are using their platform to inspire and help children achieve their dreams. WOA Grants are delivering important change and I am proud of all involved.”
