Egyptian Olympians Honoured at UIPM World Cup

6 | 3 | 2019

Egyptian brothers Emad, Amro and Omar el Geziry were among 13 Olympians honoured at a special OLY ceremony held at this weekend’s UIPM Pentathlon World Cup in Cairo.

The pentathletes join a growing global community of over 11,000 Olympians who can now use the OLY post-nominal lettering after their names, enshrining their achievements on the world stage and the important role Olympians play in society. Certificates of recognition and exclusive OLY pins were jointly presented at the World Cup event by Dr Klaus Schormann, President of the UIPM, Prof. Dr. Konstantinos Georgiadis, Dean of the International Olympic Academy and Sharif El Erian OLY President of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation.

“It was my great pleasure to be able to recognise and celebrate my fellow Olympians with OLY post-nominal titles from World Olympians Association at the UIPM Pentathlon World Cup in Cairo,” said Sharif El Erian OLY.

“OLY ensures Olympians continue to gain recognition throughout their lives, reinforcing the sporting ties that bind us and reminding us to always strive to uphold the Olympic values.

“I have personally had the honour of representing my country at the Olympic Games – this moment remains one of the proudest of my life. I am incredibly humbled to call myself an Olympian and I wear my OLY with pride.”

OLY is as a constant public reminder of an Olympian’s achievements in the field of sport, as well as a symbolic recognition of their status in society, their commitment to furthering the Olympic ideals and their dedication to hard-work and athletic endeavour. Much like a PhD and other post-nominal designations and honorary titles, Olympians can use OLY after name on all official documentation.

WOA President, Joël Bouzou, added:

“OLY presentations are a great way to engage and honour Olympians and help preserve their connection to their sport and the Olympic Movement. I am proud that UIPM has embraced the rapidly growing OLY movement as a means to achieve this and I invite other International Federations, National Olympic Committees and National Olympians Associations to do the same.”
